The rhubarb root is an important herbal medicine that is traditionally used in Asian and Ayurvedic medicine to treat various gastrointestinal diseases including infections.
It is known to contain bioactive components including anthraquinones, dianthrones, stilbenes, anthocyanins, flavonoids, tannins, organic acids, and chromones. The main bioactive constituents of rhubarb root are anthraquinone derivatives that can inhibit cellular proliferation, induce apoptosis, and prevent metastasis. In addition, rhubarb root extract exhibits nephroprotective, anti-diabetic and lipid-lowering properties.
